Holiday cottages and self catering accommodation in Herefordshire, England, on the Welsh border.

The county has a rolling terrain, which reaches its greatest height in the Black Mountains and Malvern Hills. The main rivers are the Wye, the Teme and the Frome. This largely agricultural county is famous for its orchards and fine Hereford cattle. Herefordshire was the scene of much strife and border warfare with the Welsh in the Middle Ages; leaving behind many ruins of castles and fortifications, the most remarkable of which is Offa's Dyke.

For the visitor, Herefordshire is exceptional in its natural beauty. Walking holidays are very popular in this county and offer so much to explore and enjoy, including Offa's Dyke. It is an ancient entrenchment stretching from the Dee estuary to near the estuary of the Wye River. It was built in the 8th century by Offa, King of Mercia, as a barrier against the Welsh and lies mainly along the England-Wales boundary. Watt's Dyke, a similar work, roughly parallels a section of Offa's. Parts of the dikes are well preserved, allowing the visitor to get a feel for the work involved.

Throughout Herefordshire there is a strong tradition of farm cider-making. Farmers produced cider not only to sell, but to keep the farm labour hands happy (nice job perk!); it was to be drunk by the workers during the following year, especially the busy times of hay-making and harvest. Farmers used to sell cider to local pubs and cider merchants for re-sale in towns and the tradition is still very much alive today. Cider production has been around in Herefordshire for over 350 years and the best way to sample this craft is to sit down and enjoy some; in the pretty county that is so good at it.

A self catering cottage holiday in Herefordshire - that's the way to enjoy it!
