Holiday cottages and self catering accommodation in Shropshire (sometimes referred to as Salop).

The terrain to the North and East of the Severn, Shropshire's principal river, is level; toward the Welsh border and the South, the land is more hilly. The county is chiefly agricultural, but there are metal-products, engineering, electronics-manufacturing, and food-processing industries. The ancient Watling Street and Offa's Dyke cross the county and in Anglo-Saxon times, Shropshire was a part of the kingdom of Mercia. After the Norman Conquest it became an important part of the Welsh Marches and was the scene of much border conflict. There are ruins of many medieval castles and old monastic remains.

For the visitor, one of Shropshire's top attractions has to be the Ironbridge Gorge. It is known as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and has been designated a World Heritage site. But nowadays the gorge is far from industrial in nature - most of the original factories closed years ago and the natural beauty of the Severn Valley has been restored. A few of the key remnants have been carefully restored to create an extensive series of Victorian / Industrial Revolution themed museums, most are operated by the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust.

The Iron Bridge itself (The world's first Iron Bridge) was built in 1779 and after its recent refurbishment and painting, looks much younger than its years. The Museum of the Gorge is located on the bank of the River Severn close to the Iron Bridge, the museum is a good place to start your tour of the Gorge. An audio-video presentation will give you a flavour of what the gorge has to offer and there also is a scale model showing the area in Victorian times. But a better way to get a feel for life way back then would be at the Blists Hill Victorian Town. This is a living outdoor museum where all the staff dress in period costume. You can visit a host of restored Victorian buildings, shops, factories and schools.
