Torrisdale Castle Estate is on the east coast of the Kintyre peninsula with fantastic views across the sea to the Island of Arran. It is a quiet, peaceful place with lots of ancient trees and beautiful azaleas and rhododendrons which are spectacular in May/June. There is a huge amount of animal and bird life and we even have a nesting pair of golden eagles in the area! Torrisdale Castle was built in 1815 and has been occupied by the same family for over 100 years. The ground floor of the Castle has been converted into 3 very spacious and comfortable holiday flats in what used to be the old kitchens and servant's quarters. All the flats look out across the lawns to the sea and guests can use the lawns for relaxing and for play. Because the Castle is built on 2 levels there is a large bank to one side which is super for sliding down, and we also have a trampoline for use with parental supervision. All the flats are extremely spacious with lots of room to spread yourself and play on wet days! On the estate we also have 5 traditionally built holiday cottages. These used to be estate workers cottages, farms and crofts. They are comfortably converted for holiday use, but are not modern bungalows! They are all separate and stand on their own and are linked by a series of tracks. All the properties are about 10/15 minutes walk from the sandy beach. South Lodge is just across the quiet "B" road from the beach. There are lots of lovely walks in the area. On the estate there is also a small, traditional organic tannery, where sheepskins and deer skins are tanned. There is no nasty smell and you can go and see the work without fear of seeing or smelling anything unpleasant! Attached is a small shop, selling sheepskins and deer skins and also a selection of good quality gifts. The small fishing village of Carradale is 2 miles away with at least 3 very good restaurants to suit all tastes, 2 pubs, and a bakery which bakes it's own delicious bread. The beach at Carradale is particularly good with about a mile of silver sand which slopes gently to the sea. There are several very good forestry walks to suit all abilities. Campbeltown is 13 miles to the south with shops (2 supermarkets) and restaurants. it has a great little cinema (oldest in Scotland) a brand new swimming pool, library and so much more. Spectacular views are everywhere, especially on the 4 golf courses. The "Old" championship course at Machrihannish,Machrihannish Dunes which is a brand new 18 hole course, the 18 hole course at Dunaverty and Carradale's own "tricky" 9 hole course. For days out--Oban is about 2 hours drive away and the islands of Gigha, Islay and Arran are just a ferry ride away, and all are well worth a visit. Kintyre is a beautiful, unspoilt corner of Scotland. It takes a bit of extra effort to get here, but once you do get here, you won't regret it! |
